A significant diplomatic dispute has erupted between Italy and the United States following claims by former US President Donald Trump regarding Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Mr Trump, speaking to an Italian broadcaster, alleged that Ms Meloni had 'begged' him for a photograph on the sidelines of the recent G7 summit. This assertion has been vehemently denied by the Italian leader, sparking a transatlantic row that threatens to strain relations.
Ms Meloni swiftly took to social media to counter Mr Trump's remarks, stating in a video clip that 'neither I nor Italy ever beg' for anything. She expressed her astonishment at what she described as 'completely made up' claims, also voicing disappointment in Mr Trump's behaviour towards allies. Her comments highlighted a perceived disparity in how he treats Western allies compared to adversaries, suggesting he shows 'far greater indulgence' to the latter.
The fallout from Mr Trump's comments quickly escalated, with Italy's Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, announcing the cancellation of his scheduled trip to the United States. Mr Tajani stated on X that Mr Trump's 'serious and offensive words' towards Prime Minister Meloni were an affront to all of Italy, necessitating the cancellation of his visit planned for 21st and 22nd June.
Further criticism came from Giovanbattista Fazzolari, a close ally of Ms Meloni and an undersecretary in her office. Mr Fazzolari accused Mr Trump of potentially 'wrecking the historic relations between the United States and Europe' through his 'inappropriate outbursts'. He suggested that Mr Trump's actions were making the US unpopular across Europe, damaging not only the continent but also America's own standing.
This incident, occurring shortly after the G7 summit where leaders had presented a united front on issues such as support for Ukraine, underscores potential fragilities in transatlantic relations. With a US presidential election on the horizon, the comments and subsequent diplomatic reactions offer a glimpse into the possible challenges and shifts in international alliances depending on the outcome.
