A memorial has been unveiled in the Rotherham village of Wales for RAF fighter pilot Flying Officer Andrew Crowther. He died at the age of 25 when his aircraft crashed during a snowstorm over Lossiemouth, Scotland, on 18 November 1981, while taking part in a training exercise.
A ceremony took place in Wales, Crowther's home village, on Saturday. The memorial, funded by Wales Parish Council, has been placed adjacent to the village's war memorial. His name could not be engraved on the existing war memorial because he did not die in active conflict.
Ian Crowther, Andrew's younger brother, expressed his gratitude for the memorial and read a tribute at the service. David Stapleton, a close friend of Andrew Crowther's late brother Martin, stated it had previously bothered him that there was no permanent tribute in the village.
