Memphis Depay takes pay cut to remain at Corinthians until 2028

Former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay has agreed to a significant pay cut to sign a new contract with Brazilian club Corinthians, days after accusing them of "unacceptable behaviour" over a withdrawn extension.

  • Memphis Depay has signed a new contract with Corinthians until 2028.
  • He agreed to waive approximately £2.9m of a reported £10.6m owed to him by the club.
  • The club had initially decided against extending his contract due to financial concerns.

Memphis Depay, the former Manchester United forward, has agreed to a pay cut to stay at Corinthians, signing a new contract with the Sao Paulo club until 2028. This agreement follows a period of tension after the club initially withdrew a previously agreed two-year extension.

Corinthians president Osmar Stabile confirmed that Depay significantly reduced his financial demands. The club had previously decided against extending his contract due to financial concerns.

According to ESPN Brasil, Depay has agreed to waive about £2.9m from a reported £10.6m owed to him. The new two-year deal is reportedly worth a total of £19.1m, with the remaining debt of £7.6m set to be paid in four instalments starting January 2027.

Why this matters: The agreement allows Corinthians to retain a key player while addressing their financial concerns through a reduced wage commitment.
