Mercedes Challenge FIA Decision Over Gasly Penalty at Monaco Grand Prix

Mercedes have requested a review of the decision to overturn Pierre Gasly's penalty at the Monaco Grand Prix, citing incorrect pit-lane speed limit measurements.

  • Pit-lane speed limit measurements were found to be incorrect
  • Gasly was originally demoted to seventh place but has been returned to third place

Mercedes have asked the FIA for a right of review over the decision to overturn Pierre Gasly's penalty at the Monaco Grand Prix. The governing body had initially demoted Gasly to seventh place due to two five-second penalties for exceeding the pit-lane speed limit, but Alpine's appeal was successful on Friday, with Gasly being returned to third place.

The stewards' verdict revealed an error with measuring the pit-lane speed limit, which affected five drivers in total, including Mercedes' George Russell. Russell was dropped from third place to 12th as he was given a drive-through penalty for failing to properly serve his pit-lane speeding penalty, costing him 15 points in his title fight with team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who won the race.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has stated that the team will continue to pursue the right of review, despite acknowledging that their case is 'a long shot'. 'We just simply want to sit on the table when decisions are being made,' Wolff said. 'I'm not sure this is going to hold with the judges but we have to do it for George's benefit.'

Why this matters: The outcome of this appeal could have significant implications for the ongoing Formula 1 season, with Mercedes looking to reclaim points for George Russell.
