Spain booked their place in the World Cup 2026 semi-finals, overcoming Belgium in a hard-fought 2-1 victory, thanks to a late decisive goal from substitute Mikel Merino. The quarter-final encounter, held at the Los Angeles Stadium, saw Spain set up a blockbuster clash with France in the next round.
Spain initially took the lead following a well-worked move down the right flank. Lamine Yamal and Pedro Porro combined effectively, with Porro's cross finding Dani Olmo. Although Olmo's shot was parried by Thibaut Courtois, Fabian Ruiz was on hand to slot home his first World Cup goal, putting Spain ahead. However, Belgium responded before the break, with Charles De Ketelaere equalising after heading in a cross from Timothy Castagne, muscling past Pau Cubarsi.
The second half saw both teams pushing for a winner, but it was Merino's introduction that proved pivotal. After a shot from distance by Pau Cubarsi was spilled by substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens, Merino reacted quickest to score with his very first touch, securing Spain's progression to the final four.
Belgium had demonstrated a strong track record of impactful substitutes leading up to this match, but on this occasion, it was Spain's bench that delivered the crucial moment. The Red Devils' goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had initially made some crucial saves, but his injury in the second half led to Lammens taking his place.
The victory means Spain will now face France in a highly anticipated semi-final encounter. The other half of the World Cup's final four bracket will be determined when England take on Norway in their quarter-final match, scheduled for Saturday evening.
