Met Office forecasters have issued a 10-hour thunderstorm warning for Merseyside, prompting residents to prepare for potentially hazardous weather conditions. The yellow alert, in place from 10:00 BST on Tuesday until 20:00 BST the same day, warns of heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, and strong gusty winds that could cause localised flooding and significant travel disruption.
The entire Merseyside area is at risk of severe thunderstorms, with forecasters warning that rain totals could accumulate rapidly. Some areas may see 20-30mm of rain in a short period, while isolated spots could receive up to 50mm over several hours. Wind gusts accompanying the storms are predicted to reach speeds of 40-50 mph, posing a risk to temporary structures and potentially causing power outages.
While Merseyside is at the epicentre of this warning, other parts of the UK will experience unsettled weather. Northern Ireland and Scotland may see scattered showers that could turn thundery, although not as intense as forecast for Merseyside. Wales and much of England are expected to have a mix of sunshine and showers, with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 22°C in the south, and 15°C to 19°C further north.
Merseyside residents are urged to be cautious due to the risk of flash flooding, particularly in urban areas with poor drainage. Public transport services may experience delays or cancellations, while motorists should anticipate difficult driving conditions and avoid driving through floodwaters. Pedestrians should also watch for slippery surfaces and potential hazards.
As a precautionary measure, residents are advised to secure loose garden furniture, check on vulnerable neighbours, and charge electronic devices in case of power interruptions. The Met Office recommends staying indoors during the worst of the storms and avoiding contact with electrical equipment if lightning is present. Residents are encouraged to monitor local news and Met Office updates throughout the day for the latest information.
