Lionel Messi has broken a FIFA World Cup record after coming off the bench to score in Argentina's 3-1 victory over Jordan in their final Group J game. The Al-Nassr forward, 36, is the first player in World Cup history to score in seven consecutive matches.
The match took place at the Red Bull Arena in Red Bull's home city of Salzburg, Austria. Despite Jordan's efforts, Argentina took a 2-0 lead before half-time courtesy of goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Julián Álvarez. A Jordan penalty made it 2-1 before the hour mark, but Messi sealed the win in the 83rd minute.
Messi's goal, his 12th of the tournament, marked his seventh consecutive strike in the World Cup, surpassing the record set by Gerd Müller in 1970.
'We are very happy with the three points,' said Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni. 'We have to be proud of the work we have done so far.'
Argentina will now move on to the knockout stages of the tournament, where they will face a yet-to-be-determined opponent in the round of 16.
