The Met Office has sounded the alarm, issuing a severe thunderstorm warning for swathes of the UK as forecasters predict hailstones up to 4cm in diameter could cause widespread damage and disruption. The warning is in effect across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with residents urged to take necessary precautions to stay safe.
Forecasters attribute the unstable atmosphere conducive to powerful thunderstorms to a collision of warm, humid air and cooler fronts. This volatile mix threatens not only massive hail but also torrential downpours, with areas likely to see 20-30mm of rain in under an hour and up to 50mm over a few hours.
The warning highlights the danger posed by lightning strikes, which could imperil life and property, as well as the risk of strong winds reaching speeds of 40-50 mph in gusts. These conditions will exacerbate existing travel issues, with fallen tree branches, reduced visibility, and standing water on roads all potential hazards.
Regions under the warning include much of central and southern England, parts of the Midlands, and sections of Wales, with Northern Ireland also expected to experience these severe weather conditions. While Scotland is largely outside the primary warning area, isolated showers remain a possibility.
Authorities are urging residents to prepare for potential power cuts by securing loose garden furniture and other outdoor items, checking local weather forecasts before travel, and avoiding exposed areas during thunderstorms. Crucially, they also advise against using electrical appliances during lightning strikes.
