The Met Office has sounded the alarm for 75 UK areas as it issues a yellow thunderstorm warning for Friday, June 7th, covering large parts of England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Heavy downpours, lightning, and potential disruption are expected from 12:00 BST until 21:00 BST.
Regions hit hardest include the Midlands, North West, Yorkshire and Humber, and parts of the South East in England, as well as areas such as the Central Belt, Strathclyde, and the Highlands in Scotland. Northern Ireland is also under threat from similar weather conditions. Wales, however, appears to be largely outside the current warning area.
Forecasters predict that some areas could experience intense rainfall of up to 30-40mm within a single hour, leading to localised flooding in urban areas and on roads. Lightning strikes, hail, and strong gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 mph are also expected in exposed areas. Mild temperatures – ranging between 18-20°C – precede the storms.
The Met Office urges residents to prepare for potential disruptions, including power cuts and travel delays or cancellations. Hazardous driving conditions, due to spray and flooding, will require caution from drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike.
This latest warning follows a mixed weather period across the UK, with some areas experiencing dry spells while others have seen showers. Warm, moist air is creating an atmosphere conducive to convective storms. The public should stay updated with the Met Office's forecasts and warnings.
