The UK is bracing itself for a battering of heavy rain and strong winds as the Met Office issues an urgent yellow weather warning across several regions. The warning comes into effect from 1am on Monday, with forecasters urging households to be prepared for potential power cuts and disruption to travel services.
A key part of the preparation process is having essential items readily available, including a torch with fresh batteries, a fully charged mobile phone or portable power bank, any necessary medication, and bottled water. These provisions can help households cope if they lose electricity due to the expected adverse weather conditions. The Met Office has highlighted concerns over localised flooding in areas with saturated ground and disruption to road, rail, air, and ferry networks.
The affected regions include much of southern England, including the Midlands and parts of the South West, extending into significant areas of Wales under a yellow warning for rain. Additionally, a separate yellow warning for strong winds is in place for coastal regions of Northern Ireland and western Scotland, where gusts could reach up to 60-70 mph in exposed areas.
Temperatures across the affected regions are expected to remain mild, ranging between 8-12 degrees Celsius during the day and 4-8 degrees Celsius overnight. However, the combination of heavy rainfall – potentially accumulating 20-40mm in a few hours – and strong winds could lead to challenging conditions. Residents are advised to secure loose garden furniture and other outdoor items that could be blown away, as well as clearing drains and gutters to prevent water build-up.
The Met Office will continue to update its warnings and forecasts, and residents in the affected areas should monitor local news and official channels for the latest information. Emergency services are also on standby, ready to respond to any incidents arising from the severe weather.
