The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms sweeping across Greater London from 13:00 BST today until 22:00 BST, with residents urged to be on high alert for disruption caused by heavy downpours, lightning strikes, hail, and strong gusty winds.
While not all areas will experience the worst conditions, where storms do hit, they are likely to be intense, with rapid accumulation of rainfall posing a significant risk of localised surface water flooding in urban areas with poor drainage. This could leave homes and businesses at risk, as well as making driving conditions hazardous on roads.
The warning also highlights the danger of lightning strikes damaging buildings and infrastructure, alongside the threat of hail causing minor damage. Strong winds associated with these storms may lead to falling branches or other debris, impacting travel and outdoor activities. The Met Office has warned there is a slight chance of power cuts and disruptions to services.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the UK, Scotland and Northern Ireland are expected to see a mix of sunshine and scattered showers, while Wales and parts of southern England, including London, face a higher risk of convective downpours. Temperatures in London will reach around 22-24 degrees Celsius before the storms hit, with wind speeds potentially gusting up to 30-40 mph during the heaviest showers.
Residents are advised by the Met Office to secure loose garden furniture, avoid travel if conditions worsen, and be aware of flood risks. Motorists should slow down, increase stopping distances, and prepare for reduced visibility. Pedestrians should seek shelter and steer clear of trees or metal structures during lightning activity.
