The Met Office has sounded the alarm with a series of yellow weather warnings for heavy rainfall, covering 12 UK regions where residents are bracing for a significant change in conditions. The warnings – which primarily focus on potential disruption from challenging driving conditions and localised flooding – affect various parts of England, Scotland, and Wales.
England's North West, North East, Yorkshire & Humber, West Midlands, and East Midlands regions are all under warning, with specific counties expected to bear the brunt of the rainfall. Moving north, central and southern Scotland, including the Lothians and Borders, are also included in the Met Office's advisory. South and Mid Wales areas have not been spared either.
Forecasters predict that the heavy rain will lead to hazardous driving conditions on roads, with a higher likelihood of spray and surface water causing longer journey times for commuters and leisure travellers alike. There is also a risk of localised flooding in low-lying areas, potentially affecting homes and businesses where drainage systems are overwhelmed.
Temperatures may remain relatively mild around 16-19°C, but strong winds – reaching up to 40 mph in exposed coastal and upland regions – will add to the challenging conditions and make outdoor activities hazardous.
The Met Office advises residents to take precautions by checking local weather forecasts regularly, planning travel routes carefully, and allowing extra time for journeys. Homeowners in flood-prone areas should ensure drains are clear and consider necessary flood protection measures. Crucially, individuals should avoid walking or driving through floodwater due to deceptive depths and strong currents.
