The Met Office has released its new list of storm names for the 2026-2027 season, coinciding with the start of meteorological autumn and the UK's storm season today, 1 September.
The first names on the alphabetical list are Austen, Boelo, and Chloe, followed by Dano and Evelyn. These names were chosen by members of the public.
Storms are named by the UK Met Office, Ireland's Met Éireann, or the Netherlands' KNMI when they are forecast to cause "medium" or "high" impacts. This typically occurs when strong winds are expected, though heavy rainfall or snow that could lead to flooding or travel disruption are also considered.
The naming system aims to provide clear and consistent information about severe weather, helping the public to stay safe. This marks the eleventh year of storm naming in the UK.
