The Met Office has issued a stark warning: severe thunderstorms will sweep across parts of the UK tomorrow, unleashing torrential downpours, lightning strikes, and strong gusts that could leave residents battling treacherous roads and disrupted travel. A yellow warning covers six distinct areas where weather conditions are expected to be at their most unsettled.
Affected regions include northern England, central Scotland, and parts of Northern Ireland – specifically Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and West Yorkshire in England; Edinburgh and the Lothians, Glasgow area in Scotland; and County Antrim and County Down in Northern Ireland. Forecasters anticipate rapid development of thunderstorms, dumping 20-30mm of rain in short order, with some areas potentially seeing up to 50mm.
The primary concerns are surface water flooding, which could impact roads and public transport, as well as the risk of power cuts due to lightning strikes affecting infrastructure. Gusts of wind reaching 30-40 mph are also possible during the heaviest downpours.
Before the storms arrive, temperatures will remain relatively mild, with highs around 18-20°C in the south and 15-17°C further north. However, the arrival of thunderstorms could bring a temporary drop in temperatures, making conditions feel cooler. The Met Office urges residents to stay updated with the latest forecasts and be prepared for potential impacts.
For those travelling, particular caution is advised, as visibility will likely be severely reduced during heavy rain, while standing water on roads may pose a hazard. Public transport users should check service updates before commencing their journeys, as bus and train services may experience delays or cancellations. Homeowners in low-lying areas are advised to take precautions against potential flooding.
