The UK is bracing itself for one of its busiest weeks on record in terms of energy consumption, with millions of people relying on their homes for heating and cooking as temperatures plummet to just 4°C (39°F) in some areas. The Met Office has issued a warning, urging households to take immediate action to prevent power cuts.
According to Met Office data, Monday is set to be the peak day for energy demand, with the North West and North East of England at particular risk due to cold temperatures and strong winds.
The organisation warns that if energy consumption exceeds supply, power cuts could occur across the UK. The Highlands and Islands in Scotland, as well as Wales' valleys and mountainous regions, are also under threat from potential outages. Northern Ireland is not immune either, with households advised to switch off non-essential appliances.
The Met Office advises that switching off four key appliances – refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, and electric water heaters – for a few hours can make a significant difference in reducing energy demand, thereby preventing potential power outages and ensuring a stable supply of electricity throughout the week.
