The UK is bracing itself for an "exceptional" heatwave, with the Met Office warning of record-breaking temperatures that could see highs of up to 30C in some areas. The organisation has issued a yellow weather warning for the entire country, as experts predict a prolonged period of dry and sunny conditions.
Twenty-two areas across the UK are expected to remain dry for five days, including parts of London, Birmingham, and Manchester. Temperatures will soar in these regions, with highs of 27C, 28C, and 29C predicted respectively.
The Met Office is urging residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, such as staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day, and checking on vulnerable neighbours. This is particularly important for older or disabled people, who may be more susceptible to heat exhaustion.
Regional breakdowns show that:
- In England, areas expected to remain dry include parts of London (27C), Birmingham (28C), and Manchester (29C).
- In Scotland, Glasgow (26C) and Edinburgh (25C) are among the areas that may see some sunshine.
- In Wales, Cardiff (27C) is expected to stay dry, while other parts of the country can expect rain and thunderstorms.
- In Northern Ireland, Belfast (28C) and Derry/Londonderry (29C) are among the areas that will remain dry for 5 days.
