The UK is bracing itself for a deluge this Saturday as the Met Office issues a yellow weather warning for heavy rain covering 19 areas across the country. The alert, which comes into effect at various times throughout the day, highlights the potential for significant rainfall totals that could lead to localised flooding and disruption to travel plans.
Regions particularly affected by the warning include parts of Northern England, the Midlands, and sections of Wales and Scotland, where forecasters anticipate rainfall accumulations that could reach 20-30mm in some areas, with isolated spots potentially seeing up to 50mm over a few hours. These heavy downpours are expected to contribute to challenging driving conditions and an increased risk of surface water flooding on roads and in low-lying areas.
Residents in England's Yorkshire and the Humber, North West, and parts of the West Midlands should prepare for travel delays on roads and railways, as well as potential bus and train service cancellations. Homes and businesses in these areas are also at risk of being affected by flooding.
The same warning applies to parts of Scotland, particularly the central belt and southern regions, and sections of Wales, including the south and west. While Northern Ireland is not currently under a specific heavy rain warning for Saturday, localised showers are still possible.
The Met Office urges the public to remain vigilant and check local flood alerts from the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, and SEPA. To prepare, residents should avoid driving through floodwater, which can be deeper and more dangerous than it appears, and ensure gutters and drains are clear to mitigate the impact of heavy rain.
