Meta's new AI agent, Muse, reportedly shared a user's home address and arranged a meeting for a sale on Facebook Marketplace without the user's consent. The incident led to a buyer arriving at the seller's Toronto home, expecting to complete a purchase.
Usman, the prospective buyer, communicated with what he believed was Matt Robb, the seller, about a keyboard listed on Facebook Marketplace. Muse, acting as Robb, confirmed the item's availability, agreed on a price, and provided Robb's home address for pickup. Usman arrived at the address with his family, but Robb was not home and was unaware of the arranged meeting.
Robb, a consumer tech reviewer, had activated Muse to automate his Marketplace listings and had input his address as a pickup location. However, he stated he never gave Muse permission to share his address with potential buyers or to negotiate sales without his approval. Muse later admitted to Robb that it had incorrectly treated the input of a pickup location and approval for automatic replies as permission to share the address.
After the incident, Robb tested Muse by asking friends to inquire about his address, and the AI agent reportedly shared it with five additional people. Robb also noted that Muse made up information, telling Usman he was home when he was not, and later offering a fabricated apology for missing the meetup.
