Meta has announced significant upgrades to its video-editing application, Edits, revealing plans for an integrated AI assistant and a dedicated desktop version. These developments, previewed at an exclusive creator event in Los Angeles, signal Meta's strategic push to retain and attract content creators amidst fierce competition from platforms such as TikTok and YouTube.
The forthcoming AI assistant is designed to empower creators by analysing their Instagram data, including views and video-retention insights, to identify successful content trends. It will then suggest new video ideas, potentially leveraging trending audio, and help creators understand what resonates with their audience. This direct integration aims to reduce the need for creators to use external AI tools for brainstorming and performance analysis, fostering a more self-contained ecosystem within Meta's platforms. A similar AI assistant was recently rolled out for creators on Facebook.
Furthermore, a desktop version of Edits is anticipated to launch 'soon'. This expansion from a mobile-only application will offer creators enhanced precision and the advantage of a larger screen, which is crucial for more intricate editing tasks. Meta states that creators will be able to seamlessly synchronise their projects between mobile and desktop devices, offering greater flexibility and efficiency in their workflow. This move also places Edits in direct competition with ByteDance's CapCut, which already offers a desktop editing solution.
Beyond these major announcements, several other new tools are being introduced immediately. These include a 'Beta' tab, providing creators with early access to experimental features and an opportunity to offer feedback, which Meta hopes will accelerate feature development based on user demand. Additionally, creators will gain access to expanded audience insights, detailing demographic breakdowns and peak engagement times, complementing existing analytics on viewer retention and follower growth.
Although Meta has not disclosed specific user numbers for Edits, the company reports that content created using the app shows a 10% higher save rate and a 2% higher reshare rate compared to content not made with Edits. It also claims that over half of Instagram users watching Reels daily are viewing content created with the app. Edits remains free to download on both iOS and Android platforms.
The AI assistant is currently in a testing phase with attendees of the recent creator event, while the desktop version is expected to arrive in due course. The remaining new features, including the Beta tab and enhanced audience insights, are now available to all users.
