Mexico and Peru have agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations, according to a joint statement released on 7 August. The two countries cited "historic ties of brotherhood, friendship and cooperation" as the reason for the reconciliation and reaffirmed their respect for international law.
Diplomatic relations had broken down after former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez sought asylum in the Mexican embassy in November 2025. Chávez, who was charged for a 2022 coup attempt, has been granted safe passage and has reportedly left Peru, as confirmed by Peruvian Foreign Minister Carlos Espá.
While Chávez is now in Mexico, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry stated that Peru maintains the right "to request the eventual extradition" of Chávez. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum welcomed Chávez to Mexico and reiterated support for ousted Peruvian President Pedro Castillo. The restoration of relations follows new Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori taking office last week.
