Michael Dugher has been officially appointed as the UK government's Music Champion, a new role designed to bolster the nation's vibrant music industry. The announcement, made by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, coincides with the publication of 'Turn It Up: Our Plan for Music', the government's strategy for the sector. Mr Dugher's tenure commenced today, 13 July 2026, and is set for an initial year-long period, with the possibility of extension.
The unremunerated position will see Mr Dugher act as a pivotal link between the government and the music sector. His primary responsibilities include advocating for the industry's interests, supporting the implementation of the new Plan for Music, and identifying further avenues for growth and development within the sector. This initiative aims to ensure the UK's music industry continues to thrive both domestically and internationally.
Mr Dugher brings a wealth of experience to the role, spanning over three decades in leadership positions across both government and industry. A lifelong music enthusiast, he served as a Member of Parliament from 2010 to 2017, during which time he held significant roles including Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport. Before his parliamentary career, he was a special advisor in government, notably as Chief Political Spokesman for then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Following his departure from Parliament, Mr Dugher took on the role of CEO of UK Music, the industry's commercial umbrella body. Over three years, he worked extensively with various organisations to represent, support, and champion the sector. His contributions to music were recognised in 2018 with a Fellowship at the Leeds Conservatoire. He also previously served as a Board member for the Ivors Academy Trust, further cementing his deep connections within the industry.
The appointment comes as the government seeks to maximise the cultural and economic contributions of the music industry. The 'Turn It Up' plan outlines various measures aimed at supporting artists, venues, and businesses across the UK. Michael Dugher's role is expected to be crucial in ensuring these policies are effectively communicated and implemented, fostering an environment conducive to continued innovation and success.
