Today, voters in Michigan are participating in a Democratic primary for the US Senate, a contest seen as a significant test for the party's future direction. The choice is between Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive advocating for universal healthcare, and Haley Stevens, a moderate candidate backed by the establishment.
El-Sayed, a 41-year-old former public health official, has reportedly led in recent polls against Stevens, a 43-year-old US representative. The race has attracted substantial outside spending, with over $40 million reportedly used to support Stevens or target El-Sayed, including funds from groups linked to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac).
The victor of this primary will advance to face Mike Rogers, a former congressman and the Republican nominee for US Senate in 2024. This Michigan seat is considered vital for Democrats in their effort to regain control of the US Senate, where Republicans currently hold 53 of 100 seats.
Other primaries are also taking place today, including in Missouri, where voters will consider former US representative Cori Bush's bid to return to Congress, and in Washington state's third congressional district.
