A devastating case of alleged neglect has unfolded in Flint township, Michigan, where a seven-year-old boy's tragic death has led to second-degree murder charges against his parents. Casper O'Brien's life was tragically cut short when he passed away at the age of 7, weighing an astonishing 113 kilograms (250lbs), sparking an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his demise.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has announced that Damien O'Brien, 40, and Jessica O'Brien, 41, will face charges in connection with their son's death. At the time of his passing, Casper stood at just 1.3 metres (4ft 2.5in) tall but weighed an alarming 255lbs, a weight significantly above typical paediatric recommendations for children of his age.
Court documents filed by the Genesee County prosecutor's office claim that the O'Briens caused severe physical harm to Casper, who was described as being immobile. Authorities further allege that the couple failed to ensure their son received necessary medical attention and did not maintain a safe living environment for him. Police reports indicate the boy was discovered in a makeshift bed shared by four family members.
A forensic autopsy revealed that Casper had not been seen by his primary care physician since February 2024, at which point he was referred to a paediatric endocrinologist. However, his parents reportedly never took him to this follow-up appointment. The deputy medical examiner, John A Bechinski, noted in the autopsy report that Casper's diet was purportedly limited to potato chips and fries due to 'texture issues'.
Prosecutor Leyton stated that Casper's family did not appear to lack financial resources, with Damien O'Brien holding a stable job that provided health insurance for the entire household. If convicted, the O'Briens could face a sentence of life imprisonment.
The couple is also facing an additional charge of second-degree child abuse involving another child residing in the home – a five-year-old girl who was deemed morbidly obese by medical professionals and found outside the home naked, dirty, and with matted hair.
