Microsoft has unveiled its latest consumer-focused laptop, the Surface Laptop 8, which promises enhanced speed and extended battery life. This new iteration directly replaces the 2024 model, continuing Microsoft's push into ARM-based, Qualcomm-powered PCs designed to compete with the likes of Apple's MacBook Air and other lightweight machines. However, these advancements come with a substantial price increase, primarily due to the ongoing high costs of memory and chips.
The Surface Laptop 8 is available with a choice of Qualcomm's cutting-edge Snapdragon X2 Plus or Elite chips. Starting at £1,449, the device is £400 more expensive than its predecessor's launch price. This significant jump reflects what industry insiders are calling 'RAMageddon,' a period of elevated component costs impacting consumer electronics across the board. Beyond the internal upgrades, the laptop maintains a familiar aesthetic, featuring a robust aluminium body, a comfortable keyboard, and a sharp 120Hz LCD screen, available in 13.8-inch or 15-inch options. A new jade green colour option adds a fresh visual touch.
One of the standout features of the Surface Laptop 8 is its generous haptic touchpad, which leverages Windows 11's new haptic signals. This technology provides tactile feedback for various interactions, such as hovering over the 'close' button or snapping windows to the side of the screen, enhancing the overall user experience. The display itself is bright and high quality, supporting HDR and Dolby Vision, though its glossy finish can be prone to glare in certain lighting conditions. The integrated speakers deliver clear audio, avoiding tinny sounds even at higher volumes, despite a lack of deep bass.
Performance-wise, the X2 Elite version, as reviewed, shows a modest improvement of 16% to 20% in single-core processor performance and roughly 10% faster graphics compared to the previous generation. While it feels responsive and capable for most everyday tasks and even light gaming, it still trails behind competitors like Apple's M5 MacBook Air. A significant advantage, however, is its near-silent operation, with fans only becoming audible under heavy load, a stark contrast to hotter-running Intel-based models. Battery life is a major selling point, with the Surface Laptop 8 achieving nearly 14 hours of demanding work and potentially two days of lighter use, making it exceptionally good for a Windows PC.
Connectivity options include two USB-C ports, a USB-A port, a headphone jack, and Microsoft's proprietary Surface Connect port. Notably, the device does not come with a charger in the UK and EU, rendering the Surface Connect port largely unusable unless consumers purchase Microsoft's £80 power supply separately. The laptop runs a streamlined version of Windows 11 for ARM, free from unnecessary pre-installed software, providing a clean and generally trouble-free operating experience, although many of Microsoft's integrated AI tools may not appeal to all users.
