Sally Marchant, a notable midwife researcher and leader, has passed away at 71. After working as a midwife for over a decade, she joined the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit at Oxford University in 1991 as a researcher.
During her time at Oxford, Marchant participated in the BLiPP study, which investigated new mothers' experiences of blood loss. She co-authored an article on its findings for the journal Midwifery in 1999.
In 2000, Marchant became a senior lecturer at Bournemouth University. She earned her PhD from the University of Portsmouth in 2002, with her studies focusing on postnatal maternal wellbeing, an area she identified as lacking evidence.
Marchant also served as a trustee and later chair of the Iolanthe Midwifery Trust from 1999. From 2003 to 2012, she was the editor of the Midwifery Digest.
