Migraines are frequently misunderstood as merely a headache, despite being a neurological condition that can severely impact daily life, according to a migraine expert. Katy Munro, a senior GP headache specialist at the National Migraine Centre, highlighted that people often face barriers when seeking help for the condition.
These barriers include individuals mistaking their migraines for 'normal headaches' and general practitioners sometimes noting headaches as a symptom rather than diagnosing migraine. Ms Munro also mentioned that while medication options have improved in the last five years, there is a need for better education across society regarding the significance of migraines.
The Welsh government has stated its commitment to improving access to neurological services. The UK government also noted that the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) provides clear guidance on migraine diagnosis and management, which healthcare professionals are expected to follow.
