Mike Rogers campaign includes pastor with extremist views on faith team

Republican Mike Rogers's campaign for the Michigan Senate race has named Lorenzo Sewell, a pastor with publicly expressed extremist views, to its "senior leadership team" for faith outreach.

  • Lorenzo Sewell, a former gang leader and Black evangelical pastor, was named to the "senior leadership team" of "Faith Leaders for Mike Rogers" last year.
  • Sewell has publicly described Islam as a "conquering religion" and a "death cult," and called Democrat Abdul El-Sayed an "Islamic jihadist."
  • Sewell co-organized a "Christian Crusader March on Dearborn City Council Meeting" on August 18, which reportedly attracted neo-Nazis and resulted in 22 arrests.

Republican Mike Rogers's campaign for the Michigan Senate race has included Lorenzo Sewell, a Black evangelical pastor from Detroit, on its "senior leadership team" for faith outreach. Sewell was named as one of seven members of "Faith Leaders for Mike Rogers" last year.

Sewell has publicly stated that Islam is a "conquering religion" and a "death cult." He has also referred to Rogers's Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, as an "Islamic jihadist" who aims to impose "Sharia law all over this land."

On August 18, Sewell co-organized the "Christian Crusader March on Dearborn City Council Meeting" with Jake Lang, an anti-Muslim agitator. The event reportedly drew individuals waving swastika flags and wearing Nazi armbands, and led to 22 arrests by Dearborn police.

Rogers previously spoke alongside Sewell at multiple events during his 2024 Senate campaign. Major news outlets, including the New York Times, Washington Post, and CNN, do not appear to have mentioned Sewell in their 2026 coverage of the Michigan Senate race, according to a search of their websites.
