Milei Adviser Cites UK 'Islamisation' in Falklands Sovereignty Claim

Santiago Caputo, chief adviser to Argentina's President Javier Milei, has linked the election of a Muslim MP in the UK to claims of Britain's 'Islamisation', using it as a reason for Argentina to assert sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.

  • Santiago Caputo, a key adviser to President Javier Milei, cited the election of Sagal Abdi-Wali MP as evidence of the 'Islamisation of Britain'.
  • Caputo suggested that taking the Falkland Islands was necessary to prevent 'interference of an Islamic state' in the South Atlantic.
  • President Milei shared Caputo's social media post.

Santiago Caputo, chief adviser to Argentina’s President Javier Milei, has cited the election of Sagal Abdi-Wali to the UK parliament as evidence of the 'Islamisation of Britain'. Caputo suggested this as a further reason for Argentina to take sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.

In a social media post, which President Milei shared, Caputo stated that the taking of the South Atlantic islands was necessary to prevent the 'interference of an Islamic state' in the region. He wrote that the 'United Kingdom was, in many ways, the cradle of modern western civilisation' but now posed a threat to the west, adding that 'seeing the United Kingdom being colonised by Islam is not only an imminent risk to the cause of the west as a whole, but also a historical tragedy for those of us who defend the ideas of liberty'.

Caputo, who has worked for Milei since 2021, accompanied his post with an image of Ms Abdi-Wali, a Labour MP for Holborn and St Pancras, being sworn into parliament. Ms Abdi-Wali took her seat in parliament on Monday after being elected this month.

This intervention from Buenos Aires occurs during heightened tensions between Argentina and the UK regarding the sovereignty of the British overseas territory. UK officials have noted that the intensity of Argentinian pressure over the Falklands has not been seen since the 1982 conflict.

Why this matters: The comments from a key Argentine presidential adviser escalate rhetoric regarding the Falkland Islands' sovereignty, linking it to internal UK political developments.
