Millie Bobby Brown, the acclaimed star of Netflix's global phenomenon 'Stranger Things', has disclosed that the definitive fate of her character, Eleven, is known to an exclusive circle of just three individuals. This revelation comes as anticipation continues to build for the show's much-discussed conclusion, which left viewers with a significant cliffhanger regarding Eleven's future.
During a recent live recording of the podcast 'Happy Sad Confused' at 92NY in New York, Brown recounted receiving a text message from the show's creators, the Duffer Brothers, detailing Eleven's true ending. She explained that the information was part of a 'secret pledge', with the brothers instructing her not to share it with anyone else. "No one else knows. It’s just us three. And what we do with that information, it’ll be up to them," Brown stated, emphasising the high level of secrecy surrounding the plot point.
The finale of 'Stranger Things' depicted Eleven seemingly sacrificing herself to save her friends and permanently seal the connection to the Upside Down. However, the exact manner of her actions contained inconsistencies, leading her on-screen love interest, Mike (played by Finn Wolfhard), to speculate that she might have faked her death to live a peaceful, hidden life. This ambiguity has fuelled extensive fan theories and discussions since the episode aired.
Brown also light-heartedly expressed her 'offence' at her castmates' assumption that Eleven is deceased. She recalled her husband, Jake Bongiovi, noting the divided nature of the texts she received, leading her to quip, "The whole cast thinks I’m dead. One, rude. It’s so rude of them. There’s something to it, surely. You guys are projecting! It’s like, ‘Hey guys, we get it. You want me dead!’ But I was like, ‘Believe!’ Let’s have some hope in here."
The Duffer Brothers themselves have previously hinted at the long-term secrecy surrounding Eleven's ending. In an earlier episode of the same podcast, Ross Duffer jokingly suggested that they might only reveal the true conclusion for the character in 2046, expressing hope that audience interest would persist for such a long period.
