New research paints a stark picture of a UK where up to 13 million people face long-term coastal flooding threats, with scientists warning that significant portions of the population may need to relocate unless drastic action is taken to combat climate change. A "reasonable worst-case scenario" suggests dramatic reshaping of coastal areas, forcing communities to adapt or evacuate in the coming centuries.
Even if global emissions are reduced in line with commitments, projections show an additional 1.4 million people will be exposed to coastal floods by 2200, rising to 1.7 million by 2300, driven by melting ice caps and warming oceans. Experts stress that immediate action is crucial to preventing these heightened flood risks from becoming inevitable. Meeting Paris Agreement targets could reduce the number of exposed individuals by 1 million by 2300.
The UK has already seen a sea level rise of approximately 20cm over the past century, with this rate now accelerating. A further rise of 40cm to 60cm is considered inevitable by 2100, putting an additional half a million people at risk of home flooding on top of the 2.5 million already living in vulnerable coastal zones. Regions like Lincolnshire and the Humber estuary are highlighted as particularly exposed.
A more concerning prospect is the potential for rapid sea level rise if major ice sheets undergo a sudden collapse rather than gradual melt. Researchers suggest the UK could experience a staggering 15 metres of sea level rise by 2300, submerging large parts of cities like London and numerous other locations across the country.
Professor Matt Palmer, from the University of Bristol, warned of the long-term impact of climate change on sea levels: "The oceans and ice-covered parts of the world respond very slowly to global warming, making sea level rise the 'sleeping giant' of climate change. The result is that sea-level rise is locked-in for centuries to come." Dr Rob Larter, from the British Antarctic Survey, described the analysis as "sobering", urging consideration of these higher impact scenarios.
