Ministers are currently weighing decisions on the Jackdaw and Rosebank oil and gas projects, which are seen as crucial for the UK's energy security and economic growth. These projects are being considered at a time when oil and gas still meet approximately 75 per cent of current UK energy needs.
Jackdaw has the potential to provide more than six per cent of the UK's gas supply by this winter, enough to heat around 1.4 million homes. Rosebank represents another significant opportunity to enhance domestic production while demand for oil and gas persists.
The economic benefits of these projects are substantial, with over £3 billion already invested and total anticipated investment projected to reach £10.8 billion. Over their operational lifespan, they could contribute £28.7 billion to the UK economy and generate £1.4 billion in tax revenues before the current Parliament concludes.
Beyond financial contributions, the projects are expected to create jobs, supporting around 3,500 roles during peak construction and approximately 880 long-term positions during production, alongside 125 apprenticeships. The public consultation for Jackdaw has concluded, while public input on Rosebank is open until 17 August.
