A cat rescue charity in Leeds has been praised after reuniting a cat with its owner almost a year after it went missing. Ginge, a ginger cat, was found 100 miles (160km) from his home in Sunderland.

Lucy Roche, a volunteer branch leader for Cat Action Trust 1977, discovered Ginge while caring for a feral colony in Garforth. She noted the cat's tame nature and took him to a vet, where his microchip was used to track his owner in Sunderland.

Ms Roche stated that the owner was in "flood of tears" upon receiving the call and expressed disbelief that Ginge had been found. She highlighted that the reunion was possible due to Ginge being microchipped, a mandatory requirement for cats since 2024.

What this means for you: Cat owners are reminded that microchipping for cats became a mandatory requirement in 2024, which can be crucial for reuniting lost pets with their owners.
