Opponents of congressional redistricting in Missouri have appealed to the US Supreme Court. This action follows a federal panel's decision to let stand a ruling that permits the state to use a new map, which has been backed by Donald Trump, in the upcoming November midterms.
The challengers, including the group People Not Politicians, filed an emergency request swiftly after Stephen Clark, a St Louis-based chief US district judge, issued his decision on Tuesday. This decision had temporarily prevented Missouri from using its older congressional maps in the November elections, instead ordering the use of the newly drawn districts that favour Republicans.
Previously, conservative Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh had denied an emergency request from Missouri officials to use a Trump-supported map in November. This decision effectively allowed a Missouri Supreme Court ruling to revert to the 2022 map to stand. However, Judge Clark's subsequent contradictory decision and the federal panel's recent action have led to the current appeal.
