US Senator Mitch McConnell remains unable to resume his duties, his office confirmed on Monday, six weeks after he was hospitalised following a fall at his home. The prominent Republican, aged 84, who previously served as Senate Majority Leader, is currently undergoing what his team described as "intense physical therapy" as he works towards a return to his legislative responsibilities.
McConnell has been absent from the Senate and has not been seen publicly since mid-June. His office initially announced his hospitalisation and recovery without elaborating on his condition. After weeks of mounting speculation, an update on 12 July revealed he had been admitted to hospital on 14 June after a fall that left him "briefly unconscious", and was subsequently recovering at a rehabilitation centre. He also disclosed a "mild case of pneumonia" and attributed the delay in sharing information to a generational tendency to hesitate in revealing vulnerabilities associated with ageing.
In a statement released by his office on Monday, McConnell reiterated his commitment to returning to his full schedule but confirmed he would miss the annual Fancy Farm picnic in Kentucky this coming weekend. "There’s no place I’d rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky, feasting on pork and mutton," he said, expressing regret at missing the event.
Since his hospitalisation, Senator McConnell has missed 38 Senate votes, highlighting the duration of his absence from Capitol Hill. A new photograph released by his office, dated Sunday, 26 July, showed him with his wife, Elaine Chao, offering a rare glimpse of the senator during his recovery. The office of the Attending Physician (OAP) in the US Congress also issued a statement, confirming daily visits and a "strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation" aimed at rebuilding strength and reducing the risk of future falls.
The OAP statement further noted that McConnell's childhood polio continues to be a significant factor impacting his mobility. He is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehabilitation facility and return to his office. McConnell announced last year that he would not seek re-election and is scheduled to retire from the Senate at the end of his current term in January 2027.
