A new app, Mivo Scrolling, is aiming to revolutionise how individuals manage their digital consumption by adopting a mindful approach rather than imposing strict limitations. Launched last month, the application seeks to address the widespread issue of 'doomscrolling' and inadvertently losing track of time on social media platforms, a common concern for many UK adults.
Unlike many existing screen time management tools that focus on blocking access or enforcing rigid cut-offs, Mivo Scrolling offers a 'no-shaming' philosophy. The app tracks usage patterns and provides insights into daily habits, much like its counterparts. However, its core differentiator lies in encouraging users to be more intentional about their time online. This aligns with the burgeoning 'slow tech' movement, which advocates for a more conscious and healthier relationship with technology.
Users can set personalised time limits for how long they wish to engage with specific social media platforms. For example, the app allows scheduling two daily 'scroll sessions', each lasting an hour, during which users select the apps they intend to focus on. When a scheduled break approaches, Mivo presents a gentle reminder, prompting users to consider the underlying motivation for their current scrolling – whether it's out of boredom, seeking distraction, or genuinely attempting to relax.
Crucially, Mivo empowers the user to decide whether to continue their session, fostering a heightened awareness of their usage patterns rather than simply pulling them away from their device. Pranshu Raithatha, Mivo Scrolling's creator, noted that "Most screen time tools try to restrict people after the habit is already happening. Mivo adds a small reflection moment right when someone opens a social app, so they can pause and ask why they’re opening it before falling into an automatic scroll." This proactive reflection is a key element of its mindful strategy.
Further enhancing this reflective approach, users can configure regular pauses every two, three, or five minutes, designed to maintain continuous awareness of their scrolling habits. Following a scrolling session, Mivo prompts users to assess whether the time felt well spent or if they simply became lost in the digital flow, aiming to cultivate a more balanced and healthy relationship with their smartphone. The app also offers a home screen widget displaying daily scroll time and upcoming scheduled sessions, serving as a constant, subtle reminder. Mivo Scrolling is currently available for free on the App Store.
