The Civil Nuclear Constabulary's (CNC) recent initiative to boost police understanding of court proceedings through a mock civil trial has yielded positive results. Organised by the CNC’s Legal Services team in collaboration with Strata Solicitors and Farrar’s Building Chambers, this exercise saw officers from various policing partners engage in a realistic recreation of civil court proceedings.
Participants, including members of the Operational Driver Training Unit, Health and Safety representatives, Chief Inspectors from CNC sites across England, and delegates from public transport organisations and Royal Mail, gained valuable insights into the mechanisms governing compensation claims and the types of evidence that sway judicial decisions. The event drew on a range of expert input, with participants observing firsthand how documentary, oral, and video evidence are presented, scrutinised, and challenged within a courtroom setting.
The mock trial also delved into recent legal developments pertinent to policing, including discussions on police duty to protect individuals from risks they have not directly caused or contributed to. Delegates considered the importance of ensuring officers receive adequate training and are properly equipped to conduct effective dynamic risk assessments in rapidly evolving operational scenarios.
A comprehensive question-and-answer session concluded the event, featuring the barristers involved who offered further valuable insights into emerging legal issues relevant to modern policing.
