A brazen assassination attempt in the picturesque principality of Monaco has sent shockwaves through diplomatic circles and left many questioning the security implications of Ukraine's military intelligence agency, the GUR. Vadym Iermolaiev, a prominent Ukrainian businessman with an estimated fortune of £164 million, has made a dramatic accusation: he claims that both current and former GUR officers were directly involved in the bombing that critically injured his partner, Anna, left their 13-year-old son seriously wounded, and put him himself in intensive care.
The explosion was so powerful that it tore apart steel railings and destroyed stone steps, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. According to Iermolaiev, his family had just emerged from a building when the blast occurred, with Anna sustaining what he described as 'catastrophic and irreversible injuries', their son suffering burns, fractures, and other serious wounds.
French investigators identified Anastasiia Berezovska, a Ukrainian national, as the suspected bomber. Just days after the incident, she was found dead near Kyiv. In a subsequent twist, two individuals were arrested in connection with her killing: Vladyslav Reut, an officer with the GUR, and Oleksandr Zhykovych, a former law enforcement officer. Reut's defence is that Zhykovych was responsible for Berezovska's murder.
Ukrainian prosecutors have sought to portray the case as the actions of a rogue intelligence officer, alleging that Reut acted without official authorisation and concealed his contacts with Berezovska. However, Iermolaiev has rejected this narrative, stating that available evidence suggests the conspiracy extended beyond the immediate perpetrators to include serving GUR officers, some of whom are reportedly close to the agency's current and former leadership.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. With Ukraine having sanctioned Iermolaiev in 2023 over allegations of trading alcohol in Russian-occupied Crimea and paying taxes to the Russian treasury, it is possible that this incident may be linked to his business dealings. However, an attack of this nature on European soil is unprecedented, raising significant diplomatic concerns and potentially straining Ukraine's relations with its European partners. It also comes at a sensitive time for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who faces scrutiny over recent political decisions.
