A moorland wildfire in Blaenau Gwent has been declared a major incident, requiring significant resources including a helicopter. Crews have been battling the blaze near Llangynidr Reservoir, Ebbw Vale, since Friday.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) reported that wind conditions have presented a challenge. Firefighters from SWFRS and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service have been working to contain the spread, with specialist contractors and partner agencies also involved.
On Sunday morning, the fire was reported to have covered around three hundred hectares, with a perimeter of approximately seven kilometres. Smoke from the incident has drifted as far as Gloucestershire and is now affecting communities towards Blaenavon, Brynmawr, Pontypool, and Newport due to changes in wind direction.
SWFRS expects to remain at the scene for a few days and will continue to review their response daily. Llangynidr Road has been closed, and Dyfed-Powys Police have advised people to avoid the area.
