Transport chaos is set to be eased in more parts of London as ten additional boroughs sign up to a pioneering scheme to reduce disruption caused by roadworks. The Lane Rental initiative, run by Transport for London (TfL), now covers twenty boroughs and aims to keep the capital's busiest roads flowing smoothly.
The scheme works by charging utility companies for digging up London's main roads during peak hours, encouraging them to schedule their work at less congested times. The revenue generated is then reinvested into projects that improve the road network, including schemes that promote cycling and walking.
Since its introduction, Lane Rental has shown significant success in cutting the duration and impact of roadworks. TfL reports that it saves over 100 days of disruption on London's busiest roads each year, leading to fewer delays and smoother journeys for millions of commuters.
The boroughs joining the scheme are expected to reap benefits including reduced traffic jams, more reliable bus services, and safer environments for cyclists and pedestrians. By coordinating roadworks better and encouraging off-peak scheduling, TfL hopes to create a more efficient travel experience in London.
