British luxury car manufacturer Morgan has unveiled an exceptionally rare new model, the Midsummer Coupe, developed in an exclusive collaboration with the renowned Italian design house Pininfarina. This fixed-roof sports car will be an even more limited offering than its predecessor, the roofless Midsummer roadster launched in 2024, with only nine examples destined for selected clients globally.
Built upon Morgan's advanced 'CXV' bonded aluminium platform, the Midsummer Coupe impressively marries traditional craftsmanship with modern engineering. It retains the signature ash wood frame, a hallmark of Morgan vehicles, while incorporating innovative elements such as billet-machined aluminium A-pillars and bonded structural glazing. This combination not only enhances the car's dramatic aesthetic but also significantly improves its structural rigidity, making it stiffer than Morgan's latest Supersport models.
Despite its extreme rarity and bespoke nature, Morgan has designed the Midsummer Coupe for practical use, prioritising touring comfort and all-weather driveability. The prototype model, which showcases a distinctive glazed roof and unique proportions, is set to join the prestigious Louwman Collection in The Hague. Matthew Hole, managing director of the Morgan Motor Company, highlighted the project's broader impact, stating that the challenges overcome and techniques developed will strengthen Morgan's future ability to create distinctive sports cars.
Under the bonnet, the Midsummer Coupe is equipped with the same turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six BMW engine found in the Supersport 400. While Morgan has not released specific power figures for the Coupe, this engine typically delivers 402hp and 369lb ft of torque to the rear wheels, promising exhilarating performance. The vehicle's weight increase is minimal, just 2.5% compared to a Morgan Supersport fitted with its hard-top, demonstrating the efficiency of its innovative design.
The exclusivity extends to the interior and exterior details, which feature bespoke touches such as a stainless steel trim running from the roof to the tail, echoing previous limited-production Morgans like the AeroMax. Inside, the central roof spar of the prototype is clad in teak timber, with other material options available for clients. Unique 19-inch forged aluminium wheels, specially developed aluminium switchgear, and a solid aluminium rail spanning the cabin further underscore the car's hand-crafted luxury and customisation potential. Jonathan Wells, chief designer at Morgan, emphasised that each of the nine Midsummer Coupes will be a unique expression, born from a close creative partnership with its owner, embodying the ultimate in coachbuilding.
