Jodian Taylor, mother of 15-year-old Daejaun Campbell, who was stabbed to death in Woolwich on 22 September 2024, has criticised the potential early release of one of his killers. She stated she felt "slapped in the face" after receiving an email from the Probation Service in June informing her of the change.
Marko Balaz, who was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 11 years, is eligible for early release under the new Sentencing Act 2026. This legislation follows a review led by former justice secretary David Gauke, which recommended an earned release scheme to address prison overcrowding. Imri Doue, also involved in Daejaun's death, was detained for life with a minimum term of 21 years for murder and is not eligible for early release.
The Ministry of Justice stated that the reforms aim to improve sentencing effectiveness and offender management in the community. However, Ms Taylor expressed concern, noting that Balaz was on electronic monitoring when her son was killed. She also highlighted Balaz's previous convictions, which included drug offences and knife possession.
