A major project to repair a mountain path in the Lake District has begun, with a helicopter being used to transport heavy stone to the site at Helvellyn. The repairs are part of a £200,000 project funded by Cumbria County Council and the Lake District National Park Authority.
The work is focused on the path between Swirls car park and the summit of Helvellyn, one of the most popular routes in the Lake District. The helicopter will transport over 100 tonnes of stone to the site, which will be used to repair damaged sections of the path.
According to Cumbria County Council, the repairs are long overdue and will help to ensure the safety of walkers on the path. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2023, with a new section of path being opened to walkers before then.
The project has been welcomed by local walkers and conservationists, who have expressed concern about the state of the path in recent years.
