MPs have been debating a bill in the House of Commons that seeks to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales. The proposed legislation would permit terminally ill adults with a prognosis of less than six months to live to end their lives, subject to the approval of a panel of experts.
During the debate, Claire Hazelgrove, an advocate for the bill, spoke about her mother, Ruth Hazelgrove, who died alone last October after living with a rare blood cancer for half of her life. Labour MP Ashley Dalton, who has been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, raised concerns that the bill does not adequately protect individuals with treatable depression who also have a terminal illness.
