Marks & Spencer and Next have been lauded as the UK's top providers for school uniforms, according to a comprehensive new survey of more than 3,000 parents. The findings, released as families prepare for the upcoming academic year, highlight the importance of quality, durability, and value for money in children's school wear.
The survey, which canvassed 3,029 parents about 4,504 experiences of buying new, own-brand school uniforms over the past year, assessed retailers on various criteria including fit, comfort, practicality, overall look, and value. M&S and Next emerged in joint first place, with parents consistently praising their offerings. One M&S shopper noted items 'last the full school year' and wash exceptionally well, while a Next customer commended their uniforms for 'lasting the whole school year without needing replacement' and showing 'no bobbling'. Both retailers were the only ones to achieve full marks for durability and perceived value for money.
While M&S and Next both excelled, Next received a specific 'Best School Uniform Provider' endorsement. M&S, despite its high customer satisfaction, did not qualify for the endorsement due to unspecified concerns regarding its returns policy terms and conditions. The survey also highlighted strong performance from supermarkets, with Sainsbury's securing third place overall, outperforming competitors like Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, and Aldi. Sainsbury's uniform range was particularly praised for its overall look, practicality, and fit, matching the top two retailers in these specific areas.
Conversely, Primark was identified as the retailer with the lowest parent satisfaction. Shoppers awarded Primark's uniforms a mere two stars for comfort, although other aspects received a more moderate three-star rating. The survey also touched upon pricing, noting that while M&S and Next were rated best for value, this isn't synonymous with being the cheapest. A snapshot comparison of basic white polo shirts for a six-year-old on 7 July 2026 revealed price variations across brands, with some retailers not offering comparable items online.
Parents also shared practical advice for uniform shopping and care. Tips included purchasing multiple items to spread wear, especially for frequently used garments, and following washing instructions carefully to extend the life of uniforms. This guidance aims to help families navigate the annual back-to-school rush, ensuring children are well-equipped for their studies without undue financial strain.
