Derbyshire Police have initiated a murder investigation after the body of a 26-year-old man was discovered at a historic stone circle in the Peak District. Emergency services were called to the Nine Ladies Stone Circle in Stanton Lees, near Darley Dale, at approximately 13:40 BST on Monday, where the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers, although formal identification is yet to take place.
The Nine Ladies Stone Circle, a significant 4,000-year-old monument, is a well-known focal point for summer solstice celebrations. The annual event, marking the longest day of the year, took place this year on Friday, 21st June. Detective Inspector Tony Owen, who is leading the inquiry for the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, acknowledged that the incident would be deeply upsetting for those who had been at the site over the weekend, as well as the wider community.
Investigators are particularly keen to speak with anyone who was present at the stone circle or in the surrounding area during the weekend. Given the popularity of the site for solstice gatherings, officers believe there would have been a considerable number of people coming and going. Detective Inspector Owen emphasised the importance of these individuals coming forward with any information, no matter how minor it may seem.
The ancient monument itself holds considerable historical and cultural significance. Folklore suggests the nine stones represent ladies who were turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath, with a nearby larger stone, the King Stone, said to be a fiddler who played for them. Its role as a centre for solstice celebrations underscores its enduring appeal and spiritual importance to many.
In response to community concerns, Derbyshire Police have assured the public that there will be an increased police presence in the area over the coming days. Members of the public with any worries or information are encouraged to speak directly with an officer. Derby Mountain Rescue Team confirmed their assistance to the East Midlands Ambulance Service at the scene, extending their condolences to the man's friends and family.
