Prominent figures from the music world, including U2's Bono, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, and Markéta Irglová, gathered in Dublin today (August 4) to pay their respects and perform at the funeral of Glen Hansard.
Hansard, an Oscar-winning artist known for his role in the film Once and as frontman of The Frames, died at 56 following a motorcycle crash last Wednesday (July 29).
The service, held at St Patrick’s Cathedral, featured musical tributes from friends and family. Bono delivered a spoken word rendition of U2’s ‘A Beautiful Day’, adapting some lyrics to honour Hansard. Eddie Vedder joined Hansard's long-time collaborator Markéta Irglová and members of The Frames to perform ‘The Song of Good Hope’.
Other attendees included Hozier, The Edge, Steve Coogan, and Imelda May. The ceremony incorporated traditional Irish music, with mourners singing Bob Dylan’s ‘Forever Young’ as the coffin left the church.
Hansard’s family requested donations to the Dublin Simon Community or Ukrainian Action instead of flowers or gifts. Hansard was a long-standing supporter of the Dublin Simon Community, having organised their annual Christmas Eve busking event since 2010.
