Two whales discovered stranded on a north Norfolk beach have prompted a mystery after experts were unable to identify their exact species. The creatures were found dead between Mundesley and Trimingham on Monday.
Initially, the male and female pair were identified as Sowerby's beaked whales. However, whale experts have since stated they could be a more unusual species not typically found in UK waters.
The Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) is conducting further analysis. Interim findings suggest the animals are "out of habitat," according to a statement published online by the agency, which is based at the Zoological Society of London. Genetic investigations and skeletal analysis will follow to definitively confirm the species.
The CSIP knows the animals are a type of beaked whale, and that both were juveniles, about 3.4m (11ft 2in) in length. The British Divers Marine Life Rescue group reported that the whales had died before their team of marine medics arrived. A spokesperson added that both whales appeared to be in good body condition, with injuries consistent with stranding and washing in on the tide.
