United States military bases located in the UK are being considered as potential venues for Nascar races. This move is part of the American motor sport's strategy for international expansion, which has been dubbed 'Operation Overseas Trojan Horse'.
Nascar's chief brand officer, Tim Clark, indicated that the organisation aims to migrate races to various military installations worldwide, following a successful event at a naval base in San Diego. Mr Clark stated that this offers a significant opportunity for international expansion.
The US maintains a military presence across the UK, with operational bases including RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, and RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. Other support settlements are located in Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Yorkshire, Norfolk, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire.
Nascar has historically held point-scoring races outside the US only in Canada and Mexico. The series is seeking to expand internationally amid increased competition from Formula 1, which has seen a rise in global popularity.
