The board in charge of Nashville International Airport has unanimously approved naming the airport after Dolly Parton, the late "Queen of Country." The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority voted 6-0 on Friday to initiate the process.
This decision follows Parton's death late last month at the age of 80. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and the Nashville International Airport had previously announced their intent to honour Parton by naming the airport after her.
The board has not yet decided on a specific name but stated it is "working closely with the appropriate parties to thoughtfully determine how Dolly Parton’s name and legacy will be incorporated." A petition started last year by a fan, Lydia Popovich, to name the airport after the singer gained over 175,000 signatures following Parton's death.
