Tens of thousands of people across the United Kingdom united today to mark Armed Forces Day, an annual national occasion dedicated to expressing gratitude to those who serve and have served in the UK’s Armed Forces. Communities from every corner of the country participated, with over 230 events organised to honour serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets, and their families.
The central celebrations were held in Aldershot, historically known as the home of the British Army, and were attended by the Defence Secretary, Dan Jarvis MBE MP. The event featured a spectacular parade showcasing personnel and military bands from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army, and Royal Air Force. Spectators were also treated to an impressive flypast, including a Royal Air Force A400M Atlas aircraft and a Dakota from The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Additionally, three military parachute display teams – the British Army Red Devils, the Royal Air Force Falcons, and the Royal Navy Raiders – performed aerial displays in the main arena.
During his visit to Aldershot, Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis made a significant announcement: Southport, Merseyside, has been chosen as the location for the 2027 Armed Forces Day national event. Mr Jarvis emphasised the Armed Forces' vital role in providing opportunities for young people from diverse backgrounds. He stated that Armed Forces Day is an extraordinary opportunity for the nation to collectively thank those who safeguard the country and their support networks, expressing his honour at joining the celebrations to pay tribute to the personnel's courage and dedication.
The Defence Secretary commended Southport's selection, noting that the town already hosts the largest Armed Forces event in its region. He described Southport as a community that understands resilience and unity, making it a fitting choice to host the national day in 2027, and extended his congratulations to all involved in the successful bid. Chief of the Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton echoed these sentiments, highlighting that Armed Forces Day signifies the crucial bond between service personnel and the society they protect, a bond he observed to be fully displayed in Aldershot.
Mayor of Sefton, Councillor Jennifer Corcoran, expressed immense honour at Southport's selection, acknowledging the borough's proud and longstanding connection with the Armed Forces. She stated that the announcement recognises the dedication and sacrifice of service personnel, veterans, and their families, as well as Southport's strong community spirit. Councillor Marion Atkinson, Leader of Sefton Council, added that hosting the 2027 event presents a fantastic opportunity to bring national attention to the borough while honouring the bravery and commitment of the Armed Forces community. The town anticipates welcoming Armed Forces families, veterans, cadets, and supporters from across the North West for the significant event.
